Medina City Council on June 9 approved an ordinance authorizing the mayor to enter a partnership agreement with Medina County and the cities of Brunswick and Wadsworth to apply for fiscal-year 2025 Community Housing Impact and Preservation (CHIP) funds from the Ohio Department of Development. Council also adopted an emergency clause so the mayor could sign the agreement ahead of the grant deadline.
During discussion, a council member said the partnership would allow the city to be part of a larger application that allocates more funding to the county while preserving nearly the same amount for the city as a standalone submission. The emergency clause was requested because the grant deadline is in late June; the council approved the clause and the ordinance by roll call, 7-0.
The ordinance authorizes the mayor to execute the partnership agreement and to submit the CHIP application through the joint county/city arrangement. The adoption of the emergency clause does not by itself obligate the city to accept grant terms; it enables the application to be submitted before the program deadline.
Next steps: the mayor is authorized to sign the partnership agreement and staff will complete and submit the CHIP application as authorized by the council.
