Mount Pleasant pauses public hearings after notice error; residents press board over proposed multiunit housing

The Village Board of Mount Pleasant paused action on four agenda items after a village attorney said required statutory notice was not posted, and several residents used the public-comment period to press the board to reject a proposed multiunit housing development across from nearby subdivisions.

The attorney told the board that, because one of the village's required public-posting locations failed to publish notice for the public hearings, the board “cannot legally go forward with any action under agenda items G1 A through D,” and the hearings must be reposted and rescheduled. The attorney said the board had no discretion in the matter.

Residents who had signed up to speak nonetheless addressed the board during the public-comment period.
