Council hears Special Olympics team recap; city praised for hosting events

HIALEAH, Fla. — City council members on Tuesday recognized athletes, coaches and volunteers from the Hialeah Special Olympics program after a presentation by the city’s parks and community engagement staff and Special Olympics Florida.
Education supervisor Cynthia Benitez introduced Genesis Torres, the program coordinator, and coach Gary of the Extreme Foundation, who recounted a May trip to the Special Olympics state summer games in Orlando and a surprise visit to Magic Kingdom for the athletes. Coach Gary said the athletes’ effort and teamwork culminated in a dramatic overtime win in basketball for the program’s state championship appearance.
Sergio Zekes, regional director for Special Olympics Florida, thanked the city of Hialeah, Hialeah parks and recreation and local staff for hosting camps and competitions. He noted more than 80,000 athletes statewide and said Hialeah had hosted spring camp and Miami fall games that drew hundreds of athletes from South Florida.
Council members congratulated the athletes and coaches and praised Special Olympics volunteer and unified partners. Council members said the city should continue supporting events and attending competitions to cheer local athletes.
No formal council action was required; the segment was a presentation and recognition.
