Erie County Board of Elections certifies 2025 municipal primary results; officials report turnout and registration changes

The Erie County Board of Elections voted unanimously to certify the 2025 municipal primary election results at its meeting.
Chairman Drexel presided over the certification vote after elections staff presented a brief election report and tallies. Elections staff reported 174,014 registered voters in Erie County and a 24.89% turnout for the municipal primary. The staff also provided party-affiliation changes between the general election and the primary: 261 Republicans switched to Democrat, two Republicans switched to other affiliation, 569 Democrats switched to Republican and two Democrats switched to no affiliation.
Staff noted an unusually high number of write-in votes in some races; in one race, there were more than 800 write-ins. The department explained that a 2022 Board of Elections resolution requires the department not to review every write-in name unless specified thresholds are met, and that the department waits until 1,000 write-ins before reviewing every name in a contest. Staff said the list of potential write-in winners was finalized the morning of the meeting, and those individuals would be mailed notices after certification explaining how to accept the office and complete required paperwork by the August 1 deadline to appear on the general election ballot.
Board members moved and seconded the certification and recorded unanimous votes in favor. No changes to certified totals were announced at the meeting.
