Board narrows school library review process, asks legal counsel for guidance on committee makeup

The West Lafayette Community School Corporation’s board reviewed revisions to policy H250, the school library material removal procedure, and approved committee language that keeps initial decisions at the school level while asking legal counsel to clarify committee membership.

Rachel, speaking for the policy committee, outlined a draft that adds a live link to the removal form and says "a request for removal of school library material will be reviewed with consideration for the specific school where the concern originated." The committee's recommended text specifies the review may result in removal from an individual school’s library rather than a district‑wide decision.

The board voted to retain the policy committee’s proposed language on paragraph 6 (school‑level review) by a 6‑0 voice vote. The board also approved the committee’s proposed revisions to paragraphs 9 and 10 (appeal timeline and board review) by a 6‑0 voice vote. Members debated whether parents or students should serve on review committees. Several trustees said including a parent representative could improve community confidence; others warned it could present conflicts if complainants sought seats on the panel or expose students to contentious public debate. The policy committee left the superintendent discretion to add parents or specialists as appropriate and the board asked legal counsel to advise on whether the policy should require parent or student members.

The board did not complete a final, full‑policy vote. Trustees directed staff to send the revised H250 language and specific questions about parent and student participation back to legal counsel and to return with a recommended final policy in August.
