‘Pour Into Avoca’ set for June 13 to help businesses hit by recent water shortage

Representatives from Avoca Main Street and Pottawattamie County asked the Board of Supervisors on June 11 to help spread the word about “Pour Into Avoca,” a one-day shop-local event on Friday, June 13 designed to support businesses affected by a recent water shortage.
Kate Gerber, public relations manager, said some Avoca businesses experienced up to a 75% drop in sales during the boil order and restrictions; restaurants, a coffee shop, a bakery, salons, a tattoo studio and dental offices were among those affected. The event will be a coordinated day of specials and promotions intended to spur repeat business and help local merchants regain lost revenue.
Gerber said Avoca businesses will not close streets for the event; instead, individual businesses will host sales and specials. The event is planned to span much of the day — Gerber said some businesses open early and promotions could run through the evening. Organizers asked the board to help publicize the event.
The board expressed support and appreciation for the quick, grassroots response. Organizers said they will provide a recap of results to the board after the event.
