City hears pre‑application for Sydney Avenue storage/apartments; hotel owner seeks overnight truck parking on Bravo Terrace

City planning staff told the committee about two land-use items: a pre-application for a self-storage project with apartments near the Sydney Road Southwest and Highway 16 underpass, and a hotel owner’s request to allow dedicated overnight truck parking on Bravo Terrace.

Jim Fisk, principal planner, said the Sydney Avenue site is a triangular parcel where developers propose self-storage and accessory apartments; the applicants want to coordinate an extension of sewer service with the Sydney Road Southwest construction so that the city does not have to reopen a newly built street later. Community Development Director Nick Bond noted that the project is moving forward through the pre-application process and that public works staff are reviewing sewer design coordination.

Separately, a hotel owner near Bravo Terrace (identified in discussion as the property previously known as the Red Lion) asked the city to consider creating two overnight truck parking spaces on the frontage to accommodate long‑haul drivers who cannot fit trailers in the hotel lot. Mayor Rob and council members discussed possible code amendments, time limits and enforcement concerns; public works staff agreed to determine whether the roadway width would support safe parking and to advise whether a land‑use or code amendment should proceed to the appropriate committee or land‑use body.

Committee members proposed limiting hours (for example, no commercial parking 9 a.m.–5 p.m.) or placing a maximum overnight duration to reduce the risk of the site reverting to RV camping or other undesired uses. No code changes were adopted; staff will report back after reviewing roadway dimensions and enforcement options.
