Story County approves replacement of cracked slide at Hickory Grove Park

Ryan Wiehmold, a conservation staff member presenting at the board meeting on June 10, 2025, said the playground slide at Hickory Grove Park — described in the presentation as a 15-year-old typhoon/tornado-style slide — shows "horizontal and vertical cracking along the seams" and "poses a safety risk" because children can get fingers pinched or cut. He recommended replacing the slide and said the rest of the playground unit has significant life remaining.
The board moved to approve the replacement. The project will be managed through Bolland Recreation, which will remove the existing slide and foundation and install a new foundation and slide attached to the existing playground structure. Wiehmold said the county plans to pay for the work from the conservation general fund for fiscal year 2026 and estimated the contractor could complete the work in about four weeks; in the interim staff have taken on-site mitigation steps to reduce risk. The board recorded aye votes from Supervisor Fazel and Supervisor Merkin and approved the request.
