The Public Works Committee voted to recommend that the mayor execute a contract with Gas Masonry LLC for masonry repairs at the Public Safety Building, using the base bid plus two alternatives for a total recommendation of $83,000.
Staff said engineers and an architect examined cracking in the building’s masonry veneer and recommended repairs plus additional expansion joints. The bid package included alternatives for repair of the monument sign, a full cleaning, and repair of a courtyard garden wall; staff recommended approving the base bid and two alternatives (monument sign and full cleaning), and said the garden wall repair was not cost-effective given the quoted price.
Public commenters questioned the project's budget and whether museum masonry work had been set aside. A committee member noted a $150,000 line item in the capital plan related to Public Safety Building and museum masonry; staff replied the project came in under budget and no immediate masonry work was recommended for the O'Fallon History Museum based on the architect's inspection.
A roll-call vote in committee approved the recommendation to award the contract and forward the matter to the full council for consideration. Staff said follow-up coordination with the police chief informed the selection of alternatives and the recommended scope.
The contract award will move to the council agenda next week.
