The City Commission approved amendments to the City of Newberry land development regulations governing appeals, special exceptions, variances and interpretations. Staff and the city attorney said the changes remove antiquated language and make the issuance of a stay discretionary rather than automatic when an item is appealed to the Board of Adjustment.
Staff told the commission the Planning & Zoning Board unanimously recommended the change and proposed raising mailed-notice distances from 400 feet to 1,000 feet to improve outreach, particularly for properties in agricultural areas. The staff presentation said the edits were prompted by a recent track line incident and the desire to clarify the appeals process.
The commission set the ordinance for reading on a date certain, June 23 at 7 p.m., after the first reading. A motion to adopt ordinance 2025-13 on its reading by title only was seconded and passed unanimously; staff will prepare the codified text for the scheduled reading.
