Board approves $10,000 budget adjustment for UC Cooperative Extension fuel costs

The Board of Supervisors approved a consent-item budget action increasing appropriations by $10,000 for the University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) to cover fuel costs that exceeded estimates after departments implemented 10% operating reductions.
UC Cooperative Extension and the county administrative officer explained the item during consent discussion. Joe Lynch, the county administrative officer, said the county budget includes many estimates and that departments made across-the-board 10% reductions; UCCE’s fuel usage exceeded the reduced estimate due to higher fuel prices and increased program activity, so the department requested a $10,000 adjustment. "We budgeted less than UCCE for this — this is our 4-H program and programs like Master Gardener and we spent a little bit more on fuel this year than we expected to," Lynch said.
Supervisor questions focused on contingency balances and how frequently adjustments are requested; Lynch said the county expected periodic end-of-year adjustments and reminded the board the overall county budgets were meeting expectations despite isolated shortfalls. The consent agenda, including the UCCE adjustment, was approved by a 5-0 vote.
County staff characterized this action as a routine end-of-year budget correction rather than a structural change to program funding.
