MHRC to review Metro comprehensive housing plan; planning staff will present next month

The Metro Human Relations Commission received an informational briefing Thursday that the mayor’s office has asked the commission to provide equity-related feedback on the proposed comprehensive housing plan, a document the commission described as more than 200 pages and spanning a 10-year horizon.
Staff said they have asked Greg Claxton and planning department staff to present the plan at the commission’s next meeting, and that the commission will then decide whether to form a committee or use existing staff and commissioner expertise to compile feedback. The commission discussed the document’s length and accessibility; one commissioner said the plan felt too long and overly technical for general audiences and suggested presenters explain audiences and key goals during next month’s briefing.
MHRC staff noted the report includes background, findings, and appendices documenting public input (stakeholder roundtables and surveys). Planning staff were described as working with other departments including MDHA. Commissioners emphasized the commission’s historical role in housing equity and noted the planning document’s significance: one commissioner quoted planning department data that 99% of neighborhoods in Nashville are unaffordable for the median Black or Hispanic family.
Daniel (staff) said he would circulate supplemental materials and equity-reading rubrics to help commissioners parse the 200-page report before the planning department presentation. Commissioners can then submit comments to staff, who will compile feedback to present to the planning department and mayor’s office.
No vote was taken; the item was informational and will continue with a formal presentation next month followed by a staff-led compilation of commissioner feedback.
