The Hastings City Council approved a group of appointments to local boards and commissions on June 9 by a 5-1 vote, filling multiple volunteer positions the mayor said have been the focus of recent recruitment.
The mayor read the slate aloud; appointees included Butch Ealy (Board of Adjustment alternate and Board of Appeals), Sean Hartman and Jody Stutzman (Board of Adjustment), Mitch Swanda (Business Improvement District), Ron Stevens (City Tree Board), Ross Strouse and Mickey Pfeil (Library Board), and Byron Arroyo (Police Retirement Committee), among others. The council voted to approve the whole slate together.
Councilmembers discussed the ongoing work to close out the Police Retirement Board. One councilmember said the retirement plan administrator was still finalizing items with a few remaining participants, and staff said they expect closure work to continue before the board is fully wound up. A councilmember said it would be preferable to complete that closeout before further action but staff noted there was not yet a definitive timeline from the financial administrator.
The mayor and council thanked citizens for volunteering; staff said additional appointments will be presented at future meetings to fill remaining vacancies.
