John Snyder, director of transportation and sustainability, told the town hall that the city will deploy two automated speed cameras at Mission and Greene within weeks and has three additional cameras in the pipeline.
"We have two cameras that should be coming in in the next couple weeks on Mission And Green," Snyder said. He added that three additional cameras were being prepared for the next round: two on North Division and one on Empire across from the Spokane Public Schools complex.
Jeff Mergler, speaking for the Comstock Neighborhood Council, urged camera placement near neighborhood parks and school corridors and said automated citations could improve safety and deter drag‑racing. Council member Zapone, who sponsored state legislation, said the council has favored expanding the program since 2023 but that administrative steps and court capacity — including adding a court commissioner — have affected the rollout. Zapone suggested the council follow up with the administration for a program update.
Snyder said the city may prioritize built‑environment projects when they are already planned, citing a forthcoming project on Grand that could address speeding without a camera. He invited neighborhood input on candidate locations and emphasized coordination with Spokane Police and traffic engineers.
No council vote was taken at the town hall; Snyder asked residents and neighborhood councils to submit location suggestions to transportation staff.
