Transportation advisory group pushes uniform cart, bike and ADA‑accessible parking standards

Keith Larson, vice chair of Peachtree City’s Transportation Advisory Group, updated the UDO steering committee on an ongoing effort to create a uniform cart‑parking and bicycle‑parking standard and urged the city to include ADA‑accessible charging and parking dimensions in the UDO.
Larson said the Transportation Advisory Group is preparing a proposal because current development ordinances have inconsistent commercial parking standards. “We’ve been working … on developing a proposal for a uniform cart parking standard,” Larson said. He told the committee the group has contacted the U.S. Access Board and obtained a benchmark used by another community for accessible EV‑charging parking that could inform Peachtree City’s templates.
Larson highlighted three practical issues the group will address: short‑term bike parking (for library or park trips); long‑term bicycle storage (residents without indoor storage); and dedicated golf‑cart parking and charging for commercial redevelopment. He said the city purchased 30 bicycle racks for city facilities and asked the Transportation Advisory Group to recommend installation locations; those racks will be installed first at city facilities with additional procurement possible later.
Larson also gave demographic context: “We have 20% of our population who are aged. We have at least 6 percent that are disabled,” he said, and argued those figures support designing accessible cart and charging infrastructure.
The Transportation Advisory Group will review parking ratios and dimension templates at its next meeting. Larson told the committee that meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. tomorrow in the Community Meeting Room and that slides and templates are included in the group’s agenda package.
Committee members and planning staff welcomed the update and agreed to coordinate the UDO steering work with the Transportation Advisory Group’s recommendations. No ordinance or code language was adopted at the meeting; Larson said the group will return with formal recommendations for staff and the steering committee to consider as part of the UDO drafting process.
