Mesquite resident urges city to fix rec center scheduling that limits pickleball courts

Resident Richard Brooks said the city schedules events that close half the gym during the noon–3 p.m. window when pickleball players typically use all six courts; on the day he spoke, 30–40 players crowded three courts while the other half of the gym remained unused. Brooks said front‑desk staff told players they could not put pickleball courts on the other side of the gym even when nobody was playing basketball and requested a clear point of contact to resolve scheduling.
Council members and staff responded: Randy, who has stepped into the administrative position overseeing the recreation center, was identified as the staff person to contact about scheduling concerns. The meeting record shows no formal vote or policy change; staff and the resident discussed meeting to explore alternative scheduling and use when extreme outdoor heat makes outdoor play unsafe.
Brooks emphasized that many players are senior citizens and that the city should provide reasonable indoor access during hot weather. The council did not take formal action but directed staff to follow up on the complaint and to meet with pickleball players to seek better scheduling arrangements.
