Commission backs proposal to recycle golf clubs into public sculptures; artist to pursue donations and city access to collection

The Mesquite Public Arts Commission on May 19 agreed to support an artist proposal to build saguaro-shaped sculptures made from recycled golf-club heads. The artist, Thomas Stark, asked for the commission’s input and for permission to access discarded golf clubs at the city dump; he did not request commission funding.

Commissioners described Stark as an experienced organizer with golf-industry contacts who proposed placing sculptures at various golf course locations around Mesquite, including the Oasis and Wolf Creek, and possibly on city property. Commissioners discussed logistics for sourcing clubs, welding constraints (some metals weld better than others) and the need for city approval if clubs were to be taken from city property. One commissioner suggested staging a fundraising competition between golf clubs to raise donations for installation costs.

The commission voted to "support" the project concept — a nonfinancial endorsement — and asked the artist to return if he needed further assistance in organizing donations. Commissioners emphasized that the artist would handle fundraising and that if the commission provided assistance it would be limited to endorsement and outreach. Commissioners also recommended that the artist show physical samples and the portfolio to prospective donors and golf clubs as he solicits materials and funds.

The commission did not create a collection fund during the meeting and did not authorize city staff to remove materials from the dump; it recommended that Stark coordinate with city staff for any access to city property and to confirm welding/material suitability with his fabricator.
