House adopts resolution honoring 19 Oregon veterans, many killed in Vietnam

Representative D. Draisen introduced the measure and read the names, service records and brief biographical details of the veterans included in the resolution, describing their units, locations of death and honors such as Purple Hearts and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross. Draisen said the resolution “honors the memory of 19 courageous servicemen from Oregon who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation.”
Representative B. Boyce voiced support on the floor and noted that 834 Oregonians were among the U.S. service members listed as POWs or MIAs from the Vietnam era.
After the reading and brief discussion the presiding officer called the question; the clerk opened the voting system and the resolution was declared adopted after the required majority was recorded. The presiding officer invited family members and veterans’ advocates in the gallery and encouraged members and the public to visit the state’s Vietnam War Memorial.
The resolution text and floor record memorialize the veterans’ service and burial locations, including repeated references to Willamette National Cemetery and to names engraved on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
