Clay County commissioners approve letter backing Maui Counseling’s outpatient substance-use licensure

The Clay County Board of Commissioners voted June 10 to approve a letter of support for Maui Counseling’s effort to obtain licensure to operate outpatient substance use disorder (SUD) treatment in the county.
Social services staff told the board the county “continues to see a growing need for accessible culturally responsive substance use disorder treatment services in Clay County,” and that Maui Counseling is seeking licensure to expand such services. The staff presentation said Maui Counseling is being developed as an extension of Metro Behavioral Health, which has provided regional mental health services since 2018.
The staff presentation said the proposed program would help fill “a critical service gap” by offering care in languages including Somali, Kurdish, Swahili and Arabic, and recommended the board support the licensing effort. The presenter said there was “no anticipated cost or budget impacts associated with issuing this letter of support.”
Commissioner Mogile moved to approve the letter of support; Commissioner Abernathy seconded the motion. The board voted in favor; the chair announced, “Motion carried.”
The board did not commit county funding by approving the letter; the action was limited to sending a supportive document to state licensing authorities. Social services staff said Maui Counseling is in early, preparatory stages and that staff had met with the provider to review licensing steps and requirements.
Commissioners thanked the presenter for the work and for outreach to immigrant and refugee communities. No formal budget appropriation, contract, or specific timeline for Maui Counseling’s licensure was recorded during the meeting.
