Harnett County staff told commissioners Monday they have agreed to buy 9.12 acres from Wellco Contractors near the Anderson Creek Landfill for $45,000 to create a buffer between the landfill and a proposed residential development.
"The deal was to purchase 9.12 acres between Poplar Drive and the Anderson Creek Landfill," Christopher Bell, county staff, said, adding the property was already subdivided by the seller. The purchase would also terminate a portion of an existing easement on the northern part of the property that runs from Poplar Drive to the landfill.
Bell said the purchase will not affect existing landfill operations or the primary entrance on Poplar Drive on the south side, and he described the acquisition as intended to create a buffer between landfill operations and nearby residential development. Staff asked the board to add the item to the consent agenda for approval next week.
Why it matters: The acquisition would provide a physical buffer between the landfill and adjacent new residential development and eliminate a portion of an easement; the matter has land-use and operational implications for the landfill.
Action taken: The board agreed to place the purchase on next week’s consent agenda for approval; no purchase authorization was executed at the work session.
