A Moorhead resident asked the City Council on June 9 to consider restricting truck traffic and lowering the posted speed on Oakport Street where it runs beside a popular bike path.
Terry Theo, a lifelong Moorhead resident, told the council heavy trucks pass 8 feet from the bike path at high speed and said that pedestrian and bicyclist safety is a concern between 20 Eighth Avenue North (the north end of the sugar‑beet factory) and Wall Street.
“I just wanted to ask about if we could get some restrictions on Oakport Street between 20 Eighth Avenue North ... up to Wall Street,” Theo said, describing semis passing “fully loaded at 55 miles an hour about 8 feet away.” Theo asked the council to consider a reduced speed limit — suggesting 40 mph — and to limit truck traffic so trucks use Highway 75, which he said would add roughly three‑tenths of a mile to the factory approach.
Theo also said heavy truck traffic increases wear on city streets. The council said staff would follow up with him after the meeting to collect contact information and investigate the issue.
The remarks were made during the council’s public‑comment period; no formal action, motion or vote was taken on the request at the June 9 meeting.
