EAB praises Awards of Excellence turnout, calls for pre-event checklist after AC problems

Members of the Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board said the Awards of Excellence event on May 1 was a success but raised several operational concerns they want fixed before next year.
Committee members praised turnout, the food and program, and volunteer support but said the air-conditioning was insufficient the night of the event and that staff and volunteers had to confirm systems the day before. Members recommended a formal checklist and a facilities sign-off to ensure thermostats and equipment are set for high-attendance events.
The board also reviewed logistics for event supplies and book storage. Members said most books from the recent book drive have been boxed and placed in bins at the community center; a smaller set of decorations and awards remains at a temporary storage site behind Filamento's and will be transferred to a permanent location. Delivery problems with grocery vendors were discussed; the board advised specifying drop-off procedures with vendors to ensure items are received before events begin.
Members agreed to inventory supplies a month or two ahead of major events, to convene with the mayor's office in January to coordinate retiree proclamations, and to clarify who at the town is responsible for pre-event facilities checks. No formal motion was recorded; members directed staff to implement the checklist and to coordinate storage transfers.
