Transportation board invites NextGen to weigh in on master plan; safety flagged as top concern

Derek Mills, co-chair of Littleton’s Transportation and Mobility Board, invited members of the NextGen Advisory Board to coordinate on the city’s Transportation Master Plan and offered slots for NextGen representatives to present at transportation-board meetings.

Mills told NextGen that the transportation plan is the guiding document for how the city designs and classifies streets, plans for pedestrian and bicycle facilities and matches transportation investments to the Comprehensive Plan. He described the plan as a framework that maps current conditions and future priorities and said the board will use citizen input and technical staff work to shape the guidance.

The Transportation and Mobility Board has scheduled extra study sessions, including meetings in June and July, to workshop the plan. Mills said safety is a major topic in those sessions: the board has discussed recent severe accidents and community requests for more bike-and-ped or transit service in specific areas.

NextGen members discussed ways to engage, including sending several board members to a TMB study session and funneling written questions through NextGen leadership ahead of those meetings. One NextGen member volunteered to attend and report back to the advisory board.

Mills recommended NextGen prepare specific questions for the TMB to respond to and suggested the two boards coordinate on timeline and outreach so the NextGen perspectives can inform the draft plan before it is finalized.

Next steps: TMB and NextGen will share study-session dates and TMB will accept question sets; NextGen members will decide who will attend the July study session and prepare a short report for the full advisory board afterward.
