Medford School Committee shifts two classrooms from Roberts to Missatuck, forms strategic space-planning task force

Summary
To address uneven elementary enrollment and immediate August capacity needs, the committee voted to move two classrooms from the Roberts School to the Missatuck School, authorized two additional FTEs at Roberts, and approved a strategic space-planning task force to act after a district space study by HMFH Architects.
The Medford School Committee on June 9 approved short-term and longer-term measures to address uneven enrollment and space constraints at city elementary schools.
Following a May 20 subcommittee review of enrollment trends and facilities, the full committee voted to move two classrooms from the Roberts School to the Missatuck School beginning August 2025. Committee members said the Missatuck has available classrooms (including restroom access appropriate to preschool-age students) while Roberts faces an enrollment "bubble" with multiple grades having five classrooms per grade level.
Member Graham, who presented the subcommittee recommendations, said the moves are intended to create immediate space for specialists and to accommodate enrollment growth: "That will be really important, particularly for some of our freshmen is my understanding as they come up to the high school, from the middle school, to have increased academic support, so that they can graduate on time." (Note: Graham's comment referenced the broader district goal of supporting students as they progress; the space adjustments are elementary-focused.)
District leaders explained why Missatuck was selected: it had available classrooms without enrollment constraints and rooms with appropriate bathrooms for younger students. McGlynn School, by contrast, was described as having space constraints despite not showing the same enrollment pressure; McGlynn is the only elementary building with three floors, creating different layout limitations.
The subcommittee recommended, and the full committee approved by voice vote, three actions: move two classrooms from Roberts to Missatuck beginning August 2025; add two FTEs at Roberts (positions included in the recently approved budget); and create a strategic space-planning task force of staff and caregivers to review HMFH Architects' summer space-utilization study and guide long-term options such as grade configuration or facility changes.
Member On Tapa asked whether Missatuck staff and caregivers had been consulted; district staff said outreach to Missatuck staff and caregivers had occurred and that the move reflected both enrollment and program considerations, including the distribution of newcomer (Meep/NEP) programming across sites.
All three motions were approved by the committee.
