Poquoson council approves ordinance updating collection charges and convenience-site schedule

Poquoson City Council approved an ordinance amending chapter 66, section 42 of the city code to reflect changes to the convenience-site pickup schedule and to clarify collection-charge language.
Assistant City Manager Tanya O’Connell told the council the city plans to close its convenience sites with the last local convenience-site day scheduled for June 23; staff will move to a precinct-based pickup system with designated days for western, central and eastern areas and additional Tuesday pickups as needed. The amended ordinance also corrects a prior unit reference: staff changed an ambiguous “6 cubic feet” reference to the intended unit (cubic yard) and will provide public demonstrations of how to measure load sizes at upcoming outreach events.
“That is correct,” O’Connell said when council members asked about the unit change. “Our team is going to be there with measuring tapes to provide our citizens and explain what a cubic yard is versus the feet.”
Councilors voted unanimously to adopt the ordinance. Staff said the city will publicize the schedule and hold outreach events (including demonstrations at local gatherings) to help residents understand the change in drop-off procedures.
No citizen appeals or formal challenges to the change were raised at the meeting.
