Resident reports sandlike residue in laundromat water; council pledges sampling and follow-up

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — During public comment on May 20 a resident said he and a laundromat attendant discovered a fine, sandlike residue in the laundromat’s filter and that home testing left a residue that he described as “microbodical glass.” The resident said he will not drink the tap water until the issue is investigated.
Hutch Mosier, who said he moved to Hutchinson in 1970, described handing a bucket of filtered material to the maintenance worker at a laundromat on 17th and Lorraine and then boiling and straining water at home to reproduce the residue. “What I have here is, something that I think is, microbodical glass,” he said. “I'm not gonna drink any more tap water. Not if I'm drinking glass.”
Councilmember Steve Garza responded from the dais, saying the city regularly sends service crews to investigate water concerns and that he would ask staff to dispatch a service truck to the laundromat and to the resident’s home to collect samples and test for the source. “We will send a truck out there to your house, take some samples out and see what we can find what the problem is,” Garza said.
No staff report or water-quality test results were presented at the May 20 meeting. City staff and the council advised residents to contact the city service line if they observe particles or water discoloration; Councilmember Garza said the city conducts testing around the city as needed.
