Board weighs whether to combine new track with larger athletic-complex plan as track work begins

The board heard public comment urging the district to reconsider combining a newly approved track project with a larger proposal for a football field and athletic complex.
"I went to Moapa Valley for state track and what a facility they have... I just, like to urge you guys to reconsider, maybe bring that up, have any discussions to see if that's something you guys, can figure out a way to spend," public commenter Andy Heizer told trustees.
Later in board reports, a trustee asked whether the track and field projects could be combined. District staff warned that the awarded track contract was entering staging and that canceling or rebidding for a larger combined scope could prevent any work from happening this summer. "I do wanna caution that if we postpone this, we may not get the project done at all this summer," staff told trustees.
Staff also described preliminary cost estimates for the combined athletic-complex option at roughly $2.5 million in early, pre-bid figures and noted the district had previously allocated bond proceeds for HVAC work; the board has not allocated the remaining $7 million of a recently approved bond. Staff said combining the projects would require rebidding and identifying additional funding sources.
Action and next steps: the track project remained on schedule at the time of the meeting and staff said staging would begin the next week. Trustees asked staff to bring options and any funding plans back to the board for discussion rather than making an immediate substitution to the existing contract.
