A local organizer described the city’s June 14 Pride event and said LGBTQ+ Raula is preparing to open a permanent community space in Rolla.
Jonathan Kimball, who identified himself as a founder and the secretary-treasurer of LGBTQ+ Raula, told the council the group has staged Pride celebrations since 2021 and now draws more than 500 attendees annually. He said the free, all-ages event on June 14 will include food trucks, community booths, crafts and entertainment at the band shell from about 5 to 8 p.m. Zumba and line dancing are scheduled earlier in the evening, and several drag performers are on the entertainment roster.
Kimball said he hoped to announce an indoor permanent space for the group during Pride month but the organization was not ready to make a formal announcement at the council meeting. "We have a space. We're getting it ready to open," Kimball said, adding he hoped the center could open during Pride month. He invited council members to attend and see the event.
Council members asked about public-safety planning and whether police presence would be required; staff and the chief noted that police staffing decisions are made based on factors such as whether alcohol is served, expected turnout and safety concerns, including the potential for counter-protests. Staff said event organizers had met with city staff and the police department to discuss needs for the event.
Kimball closed by noting the event's growth from roughly 80 attendees in 2021 to more than 500 in recent years and extended an invitation to council and residents.
