Council authorizes applications for $4.5M in DECD grants for school streetscape and Wagner bridge

Acting Finance Chairman Christopher Vargo said the first application would seek up to $2,000,000 for a School Streetscape and Safety Project, aimed at improving safety around Savin Rock and Washington schools. The second application seeks up to $2,500,000 for the Wagner Pedestrian Bridge project, which officials said would help connect the Stiles School redevelopment site with Wagner Place.
A city representative said the applications are early in the process and did not provide a full project cost estimate, match requirements, or final ownership arrangements. Council members asked whether the city would need to own property to receive funds and were told the city's ultimate obligations would be clarified during the grant process. Both motions passed by voice vote.
The council's approvals authorize the mayor to execute and deliver grant documents and related agreements if the city is selected for funding. No funds were awarded at the meeting; the council authorized only the submission of applications.
