The Mayfield Heights City Council adopted an ordinance amending the city's codified ordinances on the sale of tobacco to minors, changing the minimum purchase age from 18 to 21 and updating the offense classification to align with state law.
Director of Law Mr. Spindler and Chief Meeley worked on the update, and Mr. Schmidlin noted the change keeps the city code consistent with the Ohio Revised Code. The ordinance was adopted following a roll-call vote in which all members present voted yes.
Separately, Mr. Schmidlin presented Ordinance 2025-25, enacting section 11.95.09 titled “Retail Tobacco and Vapor Stores,” but he said that ordinance was referred to the Planning Commission for review. During his earlier remarks on the agenda, Mr. Schmidlin flagged a typographical inconsistency in a different ordinance's distance provision (section 1195.092.B), saying it should read consistently as 3,000 feet rather than 500 feet; he said the typo would be fixed and the retail-tobacco-store ordinance sent to the Planning Commission for possible revision.
Council did not adopt the retail-tobacco-store ordinance at the meeting; instead it was placed on reading and referred for Planning Commission review.
