Tonganoxie USD 464 staff told the board the district’s workers’ compensation insurer informed the district it would not renew coverage for the coming year, prompting a competitive bidding process and an urgent need to finalize coverage before June 30.
Rebecca, a district staff member, said the district went to bid after the current carrier (RES) declined to renew. CBIS, the district’s benefits broker, recommended MEM following MEM’s on-site interview and review, Rebecca said; the MEM annual premium quoted to the board was $125,539, while the KASB pool quote was about $138,430. Rebecca said the district paid roughly $85,000 this year for workers’ compensation coverage; the new quotes represent increases of roughly 52% (MEM) and 58–59% (KASB pool).
Rebecca said the MEM representative recommended targeted policy and training updates tailored for different employee groups — for example, distinct procedures and training for maintenance crews, custodians and teachers — to reduce claims and improve safety. Board members signaled understanding of the urgency; staff said the board will consider the recommendation at the retreat planned for the next day so the district can secure coverage before the current policy expires on June 30.
No final procurement vote for MEM occurred at Monday’s meeting; staff said the matter will likely be on the retreat agenda for approval to avoid a lapse in coverage.
