The Athens City Council adopted an ordinance rezoning 5.13 acres at 111 Hooper Street from R-1 and R-2 to R-3 following committee and prior public hearings.
Council members noted the rezoning originated with the planning commission, which unanimously recommended the change. The council read the ordinance for passage and, after discussion about resident correspondence received earlier in the day, approved the rezoning by voice vote.
Members emphasized that passage tonight is one step in the process: the property will still proceed through the Title 41 review process where issues raised during the public hearing will be addressed and any future application for state or county awards will be subject to competitive review. A representative from Whole Tide Partners, Taylor Cook, told council the application process for awards is slated to open in mid-July with awards expected before Thanksgiving, subject to change as the state finalizes guidelines.
The transcript records that council voted in favor; the ordinance (56-25) moves the site to the Title 41 process for subsequent project-level approvals.
