Mayor Dan Brady read a proclamation at the start of the June 9 meeting declaring June as LGBTQ Bridal Month in Bloomington and encouraged residents, businesses and organizations to support equality and inclusion for LGBTQ people.
The council also recognized police officers and firefighters who were credited with life‑saving actions in two separate incidents that led to patient survival: the police department recognized Officers Ronald Freiman and Jacob Shepherd; the Bloomington Fire Department recognized firefighters John Capone, Cody Cheeseman, Trey Conley, Vernon Dickey, Mark Pitzer, Derek Stevens, Kyle Timan, Cody Tyner, engineers Eric Purchase and Shane Stork, EMS Supervisor Derek Rorden, Captain Eric Hall and Captain Jason Kurneski.
Fire Chief Matheny and Mayor Brady thanked the officers and firefighters for their response in a newborn resuscitation and an adult cardiac incident; Chief Matheny said the two cases "remind us...what this work is really about being there, when every counts, stepping up to the plate" and credited coordination between police and fire for the favorable outcomes. The council presented the recipients with public acknowledgement and handshakes; staff arranged photographs for the awardees and their families.
The proclamation and recognitions were ceremonial and did not require council votes.
