Resident urges county cooperation with Bedford County militia, outlines 'Bedford Prepares' event

“I am here as a representative of the, Bedford County militia,” Conte said, and noted she leads the militia’s auxiliary corps, which focuses on public events, fundraising and recruitment. Conte said the militia was recognized by the Board of Supervisors about five years ago and that volunteers are working with county agencies to improve coordination for emergencies.
Conte said the militia’s current fundraising focus is a mobile kitchen to support responders and shelter operations during disasters and that the group has discussed the project with the American Red Cross in Lynchburg and local contacts. “We have a big event in September called Bedford Prepares,” she said, adding that the county sheriff’s office, the Department of Emergency Management, EMS and firefighters are expected to take part.
Conte identified herself as a volunteer and asked interested residents to take brochures she provided. No formal board action followed the comment; the item was recorded as a public-comment presentation and staff and supervisors did not announce follow-up tasks during the meeting.
