The Waunakee board approved updates to co-curricular and athletic handbooks on June 9 and heard a detailed explanation of how the district will handle student Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) arrangements under recent Wisconsin rules.
Nick (staff member) described updates in the coaches’ handbook — notably new emergency-preparedness and lightning-safety language — and said the high-school handbook was edited to remove redundant eligibility language now handled through a central eligibility bulletin.
On NIL, Nick explained that families are responsible for reporting agreements but that the district will act as a resource to prevent inadvertent eligibility violations. He said staff will record disclosed business arrangements to avoid conflicts with booster-club donations and that the district will make use of WIAA workshops and an outside consultant (referred to as an “influential athlete” resource) for guidance and monthly webinars starting in September.
“If the family approaches me and wants to disclose that, we’ll keep track of the business they’re working with and then create our database off of that so we at least know for sure that that business is out of the possibility for donation to a booster club,” Nick said.
The board approved the list of handbooks by voice vote.
