Board reviews 2026–27 school calendar; majority preference for start before Labor Day

The Farmington School Board discussed the proposed 2026–27 school calendar, which returned from meet-and-confer with employee groups and was the option most favored across staff constituencies.
District staff explained that secondary students would begin Aug. 31 while elementary students would begin Sept. 2 under the preferred calendar; required assessment days were scheduled for Aug. 30–31 and the district proposed a common last day of school of June 3 with an early release. "We would start on the 30 first ... The day of elementary school would actually be Wednesday, September 2," a staff presenter said.
Board members asked about exceptions, including whether students participating in the state fair or FFA/4‑H events would be excused; staff said such absences would be excused. Members also discussed the impact of a later Labor Day start on the school year end and noted that other area districts have similar preferences; one board member said they would prefer more local control over start dates.
Why this matters: the calendar affects families’ summer plans, staff schedules, and assessment timing. The board reviewed start dates, shared reasons for keeping spring break in its typical March/April window, and asked staff to add explicit last-day entries (elementary/secondary) on the calendar document.
