A homeschooling parent told the Galesburg CUSD 205 Board of Education the district has historically allowed part‑time enrolled homeschool students to participate in sports, clubs and activities but that she recently received mixed messages from district staff.
The speaker, Savannah (self‑identified as a homeschooling parent), said she had been advised before that part‑time enrollment with a credit‑bearing course at the high school qualified a homeschooled student to participate in interscholastic activities. She cited Illinois High School Association bylaw 3.011 in her remarks and asked the board to point to where the district code of conduct addresses the issue. She said a guidance counselor recently told her that a part‑time student would not be eligible and that the district had enrolled an incoming freshman part‑time for athletics in a recent similar case, which added to the confusion.
Savannah asked the board to confirm that homeschooled students who meet IHSA criteria — specifically enrolling in and passing at least one credit-bearing course and meeting the weekly/semester work expectations identified in the bylaw — would be permitted to participate if the local school approves the program and verifies eligibility. She asked the board to avoid changing local policy in a way that would penalize homeschooling families who pay fees and expect extracurricular access.
The board did not take immediate action on the speaker's request during the meeting. Board members and administrators present were asked to review the IHSA bylaw and district code of conduct and to provide clearer guidance to counselors and families about eligibility and enrollment pathways for homeschool students.
