Under the committee recommendation, the maximum unlawful absence threshold will be 15 days (replacing the former 18-day maximum used during COVID-era adjustments). The proposal also tightens the rules around unexcused tardies: the policy reduces the threshold language and specifies consequences for excessive unexcused tardies and absences, including possible exclusion from noncurricular activities such as homecoming and prom.
Committee members said the change responds to administration concerns about excessive absences and restores “guide rails” to the attendance process while retaining supports such as the student attendance improvement plan (SAIP). The item was advanced to the full board for final reading and adoption at the end of the month.
The committee’s action was procedural; no immediate disciplinary actions were taken. District staff indicated the policy change will be paired with communication to families and implementation guidance for building administrators.
