The Elyria Finance Committee approved an ordinance authorizing the mayor to apply for a Norfolk Southern Thriving Communities grant to help fund a planned pocket park.
Director Reardon explained the city meets the grant criteria as being within Norfolk Southern’s network and within 30 minutes of a main line. The award ceiling cited in the committee discussion is $50,000 and staff did not find matching requirements in the grant materials. The application deadline the committee recorded was Sept. 1; the award date was not listed in the materials available to staff.
Staff recommended the city apply and requested an emergency clause to align with other grant filings. The committee voted to authorize the mayor to apply for and accept the grant; the motion carried by voice vote.
Director Reardon said the funds would be used toward the pocket park project; staff will provide further details on the award timeline and requirements if the city is selected.
