Elyria seeks up to $100,000 ODNR urban forestry grant to cover city arborist salary

The Elyria Finance Committee approved a resolution authorizing the mayor to apply for an Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) urban forestry grant to help fund the salary and benefits of the city arborist.
Director Reardon told the committee the grant ceiling is $100,000, there is no matching requirement, the application deadline is Aug. 27, and award notification is estimated in October. Reardon said awarded funds can be used over two years.
Mayor Brubaker clarified the grant would not pay for a new position but would be used to cover the salary of the existing city arborist, Mr. Hennigan. Director Reardon and the mayor discussed prior staff who held related roles; Reardon said past recipients included Scott Payne and then Mr. Hennigan in that role.
Councilwoman Mitchell noted positive resident experiences with tree and branch work. The committee requested an emergency clause because of the grant deadline; the ordinance to apply and accept the grant passed by voice vote.
The committee record states the funds, if awarded, will be accepted and used to cover arborist salary and benefits and that the city would have two years to expend grant funds.
