Port Washington emergency responders on May 30 responded to a car-versus-school-bus crash involving 29 elementary school children, the fire chief told the Police and Fire Commission on June 9.
Fire Chief Joe DeBoer said crews, law enforcement and the school district established an on-scene reunification process to ensure children were released only to custodial parents or approved guardians. Most children were assessed on scene and did not require hospital transport; the car driver had minor injuries and declined transport.
Chief DeBoer said the incident took about an hour and 15 minutes from page to clear and that reunification proceeded smoothly; the department conducted an after-action review with the school district and bus company and identified a few lessons learned. He praised the coordination among responding agencies and the school district for facilitating a controlled reunification process.
