Chair Hassan opened the May 28 Agricultural Labor Relations Board meeting by thanking organizers of last week’s ALRA at 50 conference at the University of California, Davis, and highlighting outreach planned for coming harvest periods.
Why it matters: Outreach and training can directly affect farmworkers’ awareness of rights under the Agricultural Labor Relations Act and the board’s ability to reach rural communities during busy harvest seasons.
Chair Hassan thanked Dr. Phil Martin and the UC Davis School of Agricultural Economics for hosting the conference and said it provided an opportunity to meet former board members and stakeholders who helped implement the ALRA over the past five decades. "It was exciting to meet some former board members who served, last century in the seventies, eighties, and nineties and get their perspectives," she said.
General Counsel Julia Montgomery and staff described recent outreach activities. Montgomery said staff provided a virtual worker training through a committee of workers via CLA (legal and community assistance referenced in the meeting), held office hours in Longmont and another rural location, and attended multiple resource fairs: a spring resource fair hosted by an Assembly office in Fresno County; a resource fair in Thermal hosted by the United Farmworker Foundation; and a resource fair in Sacramento coordinated with the Mexican consulate. Montgomery said staff also attended an appreciation event in Fillmore and other community events to prepare for the upcoming harvest season.
Montgomery noted a press conference was planned in Healdsburg at 4:30 p.m. related to a settlement reported earlier in the meeting; she said Regional Director Yacine Del Luna would attend on behalf of the board.
Discussion vs. decisions: remarks about the conference and outreach were informational; the board did not take formal action on outreach items during the meeting.
The board announced its next meeting for Wednesday, June 11 at 10 a.m., in Sacramento and online.
