Solon raises substitute pay to widen candidate pool; long‑term rates increased separately

The Solon Board of Education on June 9 approved increases to substitute pay for the 2025–26 school year to remain competitive with neighboring districts.
Superintendent Bolden said district leaders compared rates with nearby districts and recommended raises to bring Solon into parity and help expand the pool of substitute candidates. “As you know, I talk at each board meeting saying our desperate need for substitutes,” Bolden said.
Board members clarified that building substitutes (staff assigned to a single building) remain on the as‑needed daily rate, while long‑term substitutes receive a separate, higher rate because they attend meetings and perform grading and other responsibilities regular daily substitutes do not. The motion to set the daily rates was moved by Mr. Heckman and seconded by Mrs. Barksdale; the board approved by roll call.
