Developer will install temporary fence at Laredo detention pond after council safety concern

WICKLIFFE, Ohio — The Wickliffe City Council heard June 9 that Laredo Development — the builder at the Old School Village site — agreed to install a temporary fence this week around a detention pond near the library and to install a permanent fence around the library perimeter in the fall.
A resident and Fire Chief Grossman raised the issue during new-business discussion about the pond at the Laredo (Old School Village) development, saying the bank dropped sharply and that, with water in the bottom, the slope could present a hazard for children who visit the library’s outdoor programs. The mayor said he had spoken with Laredo and the developer’s representative and that, while the planning commission found no fence requirement in the developer’s approvals, Laredo agreed to place a temporary five-foot black chain-link fence this week and to install a nicer permanent fence around the library in the fall.
Councilman Jaworski and Councilman George emphasized the safety concern; Jaworski said the grade was steep and the area was not a finished play area. The mayor said the developer had previously not been required to fence similar ponds, but that the company offered a temporary solution and a permanent fence later this year.
Discussion only: the council added the item to new business and received assurances from the mayor and the developer that temporary and later permanent fencing will be installed; no formal ordinance or enforcement action was taken June 9.
