WICKLIFFE, Ohio — The Wickliffe City Council on June 9 placed short-term rental regulations into the Committee of the Whole after council members described local complaints, enforcement activity and examples in nearby cities.
Councilman Gerhardstein raised the issue after noting that Mayfield Heights and Eastlake had adopted ordinances restricting short-term rentals. The city’s building commissioner said staff have issued several cease-and-desist letters to properties operating as short-term rentals and said he “fully support[s] anything legislation that you can put on the books for that.”
Council members discussed options used by other municipalities. Councilman Newhart said Mayfield Heights uses a 30-day minimum stay rule — “you cannot reside in a home for less than 30 days as a short term rental” — and said he reviewed that city’s ordinance and had no issues with it. The council agreed to place short-term rentals on the Committee of the Whole so members and staff can review sample ordinances and draft potential local rules.
Discussion only: the council did not vote on an ordinance on June 9; the item was assigned to committee for further study and possible future legislation.
