The Cleveland County Board of Commissioners approved the appointment of Philip Paul Barrett of Shelby to fill a vacancy on the Cleveland Volunteer Fire Department Relief Fund board.
The board discussed the relief fund structure and relevant state law, and the board chair explained that every participating fire department in Cleveland County appoints two members to the relief fund board, the county governing body appoints two, and the state appoints one. The chair cited statutes in “article 58, article 84 of chapter 58 of North Carolina statutes” as governing the relief fund board structure.
The county reported the vacancy resulted from a death in the Cleveland volunteer department and said Cleveland’s volunteers recommended Paul Barrett to fill the seat. A motion to appoint Barrett carried with all members saying “aye.”
No additional discussion or conditions were announced publicly at the meeting.
