Board extends cleaning contract, reviews softball floodplain survey and Prosser cabin demolition

The New Albany-Floyd County Schools board approved its consent agenda unanimously, including a two-year continuation of a cleaning contract with Citywide Facility Solutions and several facility projects carried out at district schools.
Board members questioned the cleaning contract renewal and sought assurances about performance and staffing. District staff said they tested Citywide for one year and found the company’s model, which supplements district in-house custodial and grounds staff, produced improved results. “We think things are improved,” a district facilities representative told the board. Dustin, Citywide’s representative, attended the meeting and staff said the vendor has been receptive when the district raised issues at individual buildings.
District staff described a hybrid approach taken over recent years: bringing some positions in-house (night leads, night custodians, day porters and some grounds staff) while contracting cleaning services for other needs. Managers said the change has increased cost in some areas—largely because in-house staffing carries retirement and insurance costs—but has provided “consistency because these people are in our buildings” and familiarity with students and staff.
The consent agenda also included a proposal for a survey and professional survey work to evaluate moving the Floyd Central softball field out of a floodplain. District staff said they and coaches had identified a possible site near the tennis courts and that certified surveying is needed to confirm feasibility; staff described the work as exploratory and said they expected to return with a plan “in the next few weeks.” The board discussed potential impacts on existing sand-volleyball courts and were told the district would provide a replacement location if relocation is needed.
Separately, staff described the Prosser Career Education Center “cabin” on their property as “beyond its useful life.” Prosser has obtained a permit to demolish the structure; prior to teardown district fire and rescue and New Albany Fire Department personnel will use the building for training exercises such as roof and sidewall entries. Staff said demolition will likely occur a few weeks to a month into the school year so instruction and classes that begin at the start of school are not disrupted.

No contracts’ dollar amounts were read on the record during the discussion; staff said the cleaning arrangement is a continuation and that the district will issue a full RFQ if future service levels are unacceptable.
