A Golden resident urged Jefferson County officials on May 20 to collect wind data, request slope assessments and remove leftover fuel piles at Beaver Ranch Park before vegetation removal proceeds.
Mike Rolick of Golden told the Board of County Commissioners that cutting trees on a ridgeline can increase wind throw and, if burning, accelerate wildfire spread. “When you cut the trees, we have ample research that shows you have more wind throw,” Rolick said, and suggested installing inexpensive anemometers to measure wind before and after any clear-cut work.
The request drew related updates from commissioners and county staff about recent and planned wildfire work in the county. Commissioner Zenzinger highlighted restoration and safety work at Deer Creek Canyon Park after the quarry fire, saying the reopening showed “there were zero losses of structures.
