Grand County approves deputy coroner’s travel after national grant award

The Grand County Board of County Commissioners on June 2 approved out-of-state travel for Deputy Coroner Cheyenne after she won a national travel grant to attend forensic entomology training.
Coroner Tanya Bailey told the board that Cheyenne Min Chavez Ekren received a $750 national travel grant and asked for permission for out-of-state travel "from June 17 to [the] 20" so Cheyenne could attend a workshop and follow-up classroom sessions. Cheyenne described the program as a hands-on workshop to "recover some specimens and learn different techniques" followed by multi-day classroom instruction on forensic entomology.
The request was moved and approved without recorded opposition. Commissioners who participated voted in favor during the meeting.
The coroner said the office looks forward to hearing what Cheyenne learns at the training when she returns. No additional county funding for the trip was requested; the request was described as connected to the awarded $750 grant.
The approval occurred during the board’s administrative business portion of the meeting.
