Gilpin County commissioners approved a temporary use permit for the Y’all Raven Classic, a multi-day hiking and backpacking event scheduled for July 22–25 that will use trails and US Forest Service lands in Gilpin and Boulder counties and limit participation to about 300 people.
Planning staff told the board the event operates as a Leave No Trace outing and typically shuttles participants from a hotel to the trailhead, reducing on-site parking demand. The planning commission recommended approval on May 13 by a 6-0 vote. Staff said participants are split into two groups for staggered multi-day backpacking routes beginning at Rollins Pass Road near the Moffat Tunnel.
Applicant Samantha described modest operational tweaks since last year: expansion of Campsite 2 at Jenny Lake to provide more space, continued use of a medical team supplied by Copper Mountain for EMS coverage, and a fly-fishing tutorial introduced last year. She said altitude sickness and occasional twisted ankles have occurred in prior years but no incidents required emergency-room transport. The event limits participants (150 per group) and enforces a no-fire policy.
No public comments were made during the hearing. The board voted 3-0 to adopt the temporary use permit (Resolution TUP-205-2), and staff said they will continue to require annual after-action reports documenting compliance and any incidents.
Presenters noted the event brings economic activity to the area, with participants often dining locally before and after the event.
